Fr. Jeremy’s Topic – January 2016
It’s that time of year when those of us interested in films look out for the Oscar nominations. A film that might not win an Oscar but raises important issues is Disney’s ‘Inside Out’. We recently used this film with our young people at All Saints. The film takes an imaginative journey into the mind of an 11 year girl called Riley. Five emotions are at work Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness.
The story shows Riley moving away from the town of her childhood to a large city and losing her friends, her interests and even her parents who are caught up in their own worries. Riley finds her memories of happiness being replaced by feelings of loneliness leaving her empty and unwanted.
The Office for National Statistics recently found Britain to be the loneliness capital of Europe. We are less likely to have strong friendships or know our neighbours than residents elsewhere. The outcome for all age groups, not just the elderly can be increased stress, depression, paranoia, anxiety and addiction.
Social media can help but we still need to go out and meet people.
Psychologists find that human beings have a fundamental need for close relationships. We function best when we find our social need met. Alternatively we feel emptiness and sadness much like Riley in the film which can impact upon us mentally and physically.
Last year we had young people from our church cooking a meal for an older group of people bringing all ages together as a sign of Christian community.
I’m not sure ‘Inside Out’ will win an Oscar but it’s reminded me to plan another dinner party and think of ways to build relationships within our communities.
